South Africa
Republic gold "Veld" Pond 1902 MS63 NGC, Pilgrims Rest mint, KM11, Fr-4, Hern-Z54. One of the most charismatic pieces of the South African numismatic series, produced at an impromptu mint on the outskirts of the Pilgrim's Rest battlefield in the final stages of the Boer War. Just 986 pieces of this type were manufactured to pay soldiers, and the majority were handled, spent or placed into jewelry after the conflict concluded. As such, the present choice example is absolutely remarkable for its preservation, fully lustrous and with very bold striking detail (especially considering the conditions under which it was made). Lightly toned at the peripheries, its surfaces very obviously original and untouched. An immensely attractive example of a highly coveted type.
