AVT K M AVPHΛIC-ANTΩNEINΟC, laureate, draped bust of Marcus Aurelius right, seen from behind / OVEPBΙAΝΩΝ, Hades driving fast quadriga right, looking left, scepter in left hand, abducting Persephone in right arm; Eros flying right behind, flower basket dropped by Persephone right below. The dramatic scene on the reverse of this impressive medallic issue shows Persephone, who was out gathering flowers with Artemis, Eros, and others, being carried off by Hades to the Underworld. In her despair, Demeter searched for her daughter with Hecate's torches in each hand, ignoring the earth, which caused nothing to grow. The hungry people cried out to the gods for help and Zeus convinced Hades to return Persephone, but tricked her into eating some pomegranate seeds first, thus binding her to return to the Underworld for part of the year (the winter months).
