João Prince Regent gold "Special Series" 6400 Reis 1816-R XF (Altered Surfaces), Rio de Janeiro mint, KM236.2, LMB-579, Bentes-310.01 (R3). 32mm. 14.20gm. Variety with REG instead of REGENS in legend. An extraordinarily rare one-year type recognized to be from a special commemorative series that simply never becomes available in any condition. We have handled only a single other example, an MS62--still the only certified piece--as part of the RLM collection, which brought nearly $30,000 in our 2013 September Long Beach Sale #3026. Despite the harsh treatment of the present offering, which seems in-line with the alteration of coins used in jewelry, something that would not be unusual for such a special type, it likely represents a singular opportunity to obtain this otherwise prohibitively rare issue.
