ANCIENT INDIA: ROMAN IMITATION COINS: Tiberius, 14-37 AD, AV aureus (6.97g), cf. RIC 29; cf. BMC 46, contemporary Indian cast imitation of Lugdunum aureus, laureate head right, TI [retrograde C]AESAR DI[invertedV]I AVG [irregular F] AVGVSTVS // Livia, as Pax, seated right on chair, holding scepter and branch, PONTIF MAXIM, some scratches, choice VF. The blundered lettering indicates an ancient engraver unfamiliar with the Latin alphabet, as opposed to a sophisticated modern forger. For a detailed examination of this series, see P.J. Adams, "Roman Coins from India" (1989), and L.A. Adams, "The Indian Imitations of Roman Aurei," SAN, Vol. XVII, No. 4 (September 1989).

Estimate: 800-1,000 USD
