AWADH & ROHILKHAND: NAJIBABAD:COLLECTION of 30 rupees of Awadh and 18 of Rohilkhand, all with the city name Najibabad, though struck at separate locations: Awadh (struck at Najibabad, with the whiskered fish symbol right of the regnal year): AH1188/16, 18 (3 pcs), 1192/20 (2 pcs), 1193/20, 20, 1194/21, 1195/23 (3 pcs), 1196 /23, 1197/24, 1197/25, 1198/25 (2 pcs), 1199/26, 1200/27, 1201/28, 1202/29, 1204/30, 1206/32, 1209/35, 1210/36, 1211/37, 40, 1215/42, 1216/43, and 43; and Rohilkhand (struck at either Rampur or Ghausgarh, with the stylized katar right of the regnal year): 1188/15, 1194/22, 24, 1198/25, 1198/26, 1199/26 (2 pcs), 27, 1200/28, 29, 1205/32, 35, 1213/41, 1217/45, 45, "21"/46 (2 pcs), and "21"/27; average VF to EF, with many EF or even nicer; retail value $1800, lot of 48 pieces. Najibabad was seized by Awadh in AH1187/1188, but the Rohilkhand nawab Faizullah Khan was allowed to continue to rule in Rampur as vassal under Awadh. It is thus likely that the 1187-1217 rupees were struck at Rampur, but with the pseudo-mint name Najibabad. The Rohilla descendents still live in Rampur, but without any formal rule under the Republic. Contemporary issues actually struck at Najibabad under Awadh authority bear a whiskered fish instead of the symbolized katar to the right of the regnal year. Ghausgarh, a fortress near Muzaffarnagar, is another possible location of the pseudo-Najibabad mint.
