KAPURTHALA: Jagatjit Singh, 1877-1947, AE medal (38.19g), ND, 41mm, facing bust of Maharaja // coat of arms with elephant, horse and lion, the motto "Heaven's Light Our Guide" on ribbon below, struck by Hamilton & Co, Calcutta, rim knock and several minor contact marks, AU, RR, ex Robert P. Sir Jagatjit Singh Sahib Bahadur GCSI GCIE GBE (1872-1949) was the ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Kapurthala in the British Empire of India from 1877 until his death in 1949. He ascended the throne of Kapurthala state on 16 October 1877. He assumed full ruling powers on 24 November 1890 and then commenced a career as a world traveller and Francophile. He was born into the Alhuwalia Sandhu family. He received the title of Maharaja in 1911. He built palaces and gardens in the city of Kapurthala; his main palace Jagatjit Palace there was modelled on the Palace of Versailles. Under license from the East Indian Company, Robert Hamilton, a British national, opened his Jewelry and Silversmithing shop, named Hamilton & Co, at 5 Tank Square in 1808 in Calcutta. Later, as a better option, his shop was moved to 7 Court House Street in 1811, and remained there until 1973, when it finally closed. Hamilton & Co was the first British silversmith to set up a shop on the Old Court House Street. Puddester only knows of 2 examples of this rare medal.
