CEYLON (DUTCH): AR 2 tanga (4.42g), Colombo, C / VOC (Dutch East India Company) countermark on Goa host type issue of Ceilão dated 164x, EF. In 1655 the Dutch commenced authorizing local currency by countermarking the VOC Company monogram and appropriate mint initial on current Portuguese tangas. Dutch countermarks were also impressed on Chinese cash coins and other current silver coins, among which Safavid abbasi are noteworthy. Countermarks were applied in the settlement at Galle from 1655 and thereafter at Colombo and lastly, in 1658, at Jaffna. By placard of 23 October 1660 no silver or copper coins were allowed to circulate after 8 November 1660 except those marked by the Company. The silver tangas with coat of arms of Portugal and Tanga Asia (TA) monogram were struck in Goa from 1642-47 for circulation in Ceilão, also known as de Seylão (DS), during the reign of Dom João IV (1640-1656).

Estimate: 250-350 USD
