FRENCH COLONIES: First Republic, AE 3 sols 9 deniers, ND [1793], KM-1, Lecompte-277a, countermarked RF on French Colonies 12 deniers (1 sol) coin dated 1767-A, a lovely example for type! PCGS graded EF45 BN. Surviving documentation suggests that only a fraction of the 1.6 million French Colonial type sols minted in 1767 in Paris were issued at that time. In 1767 citizens of the colony of Guadeloupe rejected the issue, and it did not circulate widely. In 1793, the governor of Guadeloupe, Victor Collot, requested the remaining French Colonial sols for use on his island. The French government countermarked the coins with the letters "RF" (Republique Française) in recognition of the nation's new republican government, and sent them to the colony. Some of the counterstamped coins ended up in the United States, where they circulated at the value of one cent. Because of their presence in "American" change, they are considered part of the American Colonial series, despite their manufacture overseas.
