IRAN: AR medal (20.38g), SH1337, 36mm, anonymous religious medal struck during the Pahlavi period in 1958, radiant image of the first Shi'a Imam, the 4th Caliph, Ali ibn Abi-Taleb holding a sword in the center.with the legend about him on top, and date 1337 below // at center, in Arabic "in the name of God, compassionate and merciful", Koranic verse from the chapter al-Qalam. This dated religious token/medal was given as a gift during Iranian new year and on special occasions like weddings and birth of a newly born child as a good omen. Although it is a common practice among Shia' Muslims, the pictorial representation of religious figures are not acceptable among some Sunni Muslims.
