GREAT MONGOLS: Anonymous, ca. 1230s, AV dinar (3.20g), Astarabad, DM, A-1966A, obverse legend al-khaqan / al-'adil / al-a'zam, Shi'ite kalima on the reverse, with the mint name boldly clear below, date off flan (known dated 632 and xx4, about 20% flat, VF to EF, RRR. The early Great Mongol dinars bearing the Shi'ite kalima were struck only at Astarabad, a tradition often continued for more than 250 years, before finally falling to the Safavids circa AH920.
