SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 406-367 B.C. AR Dekadrachm (41.08 gms), ca. 405-380/67 B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Fine Style. Smoothing.
Gallatin dies R.XI/F.II; HGC-2, 1299. Dies in the style of Euainetos. Obverse: Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga left; above, crowning Nike flying right; in exergue, military harness, shield, greaves, cuirass, and crested Attic helmet, all connected by a horizontal spear; Reverse: ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ, wreathed head of Arethousa left; scallop shell to right, four dolphins swimming around. An absolutely captivating specimen, this large silver issue features extremely elegant engraving and rather bold relief, especially noticeable on the hair of Arethousa and the bodies of the horses. Though some smoothing and light roughness is noted in the fields and near the peripheries, it nevertheless retains tremendous charm and radiating appeal. Truly, an iconic piece for the most advanced of ancient cabinets.

Estimate: $15000.00- $25000.00
