ANTINOUS (FAVOURITE OF HADRIAN). Egypt. Alexandria. AE Drachm (22.78 gms), Uncertain RY of Hadrian (ca. A.D. 135-137). NGC F, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5.
cf. K&G-34a.4-5. Obverse: Draped bust left, wearing hem-hem crown; Reverse: Antinous, as Hermes, holding caduceus and riding horse right; uncertain date below. Despite its highly worn nature and scattered roughness, this piece is nevertheless a RARE and desirable offering devoted to Hadrian's favorite, Antinous. Following the latter's death in A.D. 130, he was treated on some provincial coins as a deity or a hero, as is the case with this issue. Historically important and immensely interesting.
Estimate: $800.00- $1000.00
