GORDIAN II, A.D. 238. AE Sestertius (17.84 gms), Rome Mint. NGC VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Light Smoothing.
RIC-8. Obverse: IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AFR AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right; Reverse: VIRTVS AVGG, Virtus standing left, holding spear and resting hand upon shield; S - C across field. The issues of Gordians I and II are always difficult and rather RARE, and this piece is no different. Deep green-brown surfaces, with a few edge splits.

As the reign of the two emperors lasted for just 21 days in A.D. 238, not much in the way of coinage was able to be produced. The types, always very similar, can be determined in that the hairline of Gordian II is displayed as having receded far more drastically than that of his father, Gordian I. There is a noticeable bald spot before the laurel wreath on the issues of Gordian II, as conveyed through this example.

Estimate: $1800.00- $2400.00
