AFGHANISTAN. 10000 Afghanis, 1978. NGC MS-68.
Fr-44; KM-1019. Mintage: reported 4 examples known. Wildlife Conservation Series issue featuring the Marco Polo Sheep. An EXTREMELY RARE modern issue with less than a handful known. This is not the issue with the eagle reverse (Fr-43; KM-982), of which we have sold several, but the one with the Arabic script reverse. Free of tone, haze or fog.

An interesting transitional issue featuring the common obverse design of the Republic of Afghanistan combined with the reverse of the People's Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. The Saur Revolution or April Revolution (27-28 April 1978) was a coup d'Etat led by the Soviet-back People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) against the rule of Afghan President Mohammed Daoud Khan. This revolution resulted in the new government as well as the precursor to the Soviet intervention of 1979 and the proceeding 1979-89 Soviet-Afghan War against the Mujahideen.

Estimate: $8000.00- $12000.00
