CHILE. 8 Reales, 1777-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. NGC VF-35.
KM-31; FC-16 (R10, the highest rarity given); EL-23. Mintage: 26,000. An EXTREMELY RARE date, missing from legendary collections like Calbeto and Elizondo with only three examples known to us. Struck with same dies as the example sold in our August 2011 ANA sale, but significantly finer than that piece. Incredibly wholesome in its appearance, this coin displays a delicate mixture of silver, gold and mauve color over the uniformly handled surfaces. Evenly and sharply struck as well, only the highpoints display minor softening of the detail. As such, a coin that belongs in an advanced collection of Chilean silver, but almost certain to attract intense interest from the collector concentrating in the broader field of Spanish Colonial Crowns as well.

From the Santa Fe Collection.

Ex: Tarapaca Collection (Heritage 4/2010) Lot # 21044.

Ex: Johnson Collection (Freeman Craig 11/1982) Lot # 69.

Ex: Freeman Craig (1975).

Estimate: $9000.00- $12000.00
