CHILE. 8 Reales, 1840-So JJ. Santiago Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details Gold Shield.
KM-96.1. Mintage: 4,556. Three-year type. EXTREMELY RARE quality for this VERY RARE date that was struck in minuscule qualities. Notably missing from renowned collections that contained significant portions of Republic-era Chilean coinage such as Norweb, von Schuckmann and Tarapaca. In fact, after consulting a number of Latin American heavy catalogs, as well as digital archives, we were only able to locate two pieces of this date other than the present coin. Of those, the first appeared in a 2001 UBS auction where it was cataloged as "good extremely fine (with a) edge knock". The other example was sold in 2018 by Goldberg auctions, where a PCGS-graded VF-25 brought $3,800 hammer. Despite the "cleaned" assignment from PCGS, this coin is actually rather attractive in appearance, with strong luster visible in the fields and streaks of old tone on both sides; evidence of detrimental cleaning is actually quite limited. Adding to that, the strike remains rather bold. When all is considered, a very obvious candidate for the finest known -- undoubtedly destined to attract fierce competition until the hammer falls!
Estimate: $4000.00- $7000.00
