GERMANY. Nurnberg. Gold Medallic 10 Ducats, ND (1688)-PHM. PCGS Genuine--Repaired, AU Details Gold Shield.
45mm; 34.62 gms. Fr-1863 (old listing); Erlanger-572. By P. H. Mueller. Commemorating the opening of the new city hall. Obverse: City view of Nurnberg; radiant Eye of Providence above; in four lines in exergue, NUMMUS REIP NORIMBERG / NACH DEM ALTEN / SCHROT UND / KORN; Reverse: SUB UMBRA ALARUM, civic goddess seated left on two shield, cradling cornucopia and holding hat on pole; city hall in the background; imperial eagle above, wearing crown and holding scepter and orb. An incredibly RARE medallic issue, this type mimics that struck in silver known as the 'rathaustaler,' and is likely one of just two known examples, the other being the Erlanger specimen selling in October 2008 for a hammer of 54,000 Euros. The damage designation for our piece emanates from some old cleaning, with the surfaces displaying some scattered marks and hairlines. Nevertheless, an exceptional specimen for those building advanced cabinets of gold or medallic issues.
