GREAT BRITAIN. Victoria Golden & Diamond Jubilee Gold Medal, 1887 / 1897. MINT STATE.
30mm; 24 gms. Joslin-208a; Mussell-293; BHM-Unlisted; Eimer-Unlisted; Barac-642. By J. E. Boehm (obv.) & C. Emptmayer (rev.). Obverse: Crowned and veiled 'jubilee' bust left; Reverse: Legend in eight lines below crown; all within wreath; Edge: S.H.S. PRINCESS VICTOR OF HOHENLOHE. With loop attached and ribbon and gilt clasp with crown and "1897." Exceedingly lustrous and prooflike, though with a fair number of marks and hairlines indicative of wearing.

This rather interesting golden jubilee medal, of which roughly 100 were allegedly produced, were presented to members of the royal family and household, along with other high-ranking dignitaries. Princess Victor of Hohenlohe was a British-born aristocrat (nee Laura Williamina Seymour) who attained royalty following her marriage to Prince Victor of Hohenlohe, whose mother was Queen Victoria's half-sister. This medal indicates that she took part in the golden jubilee celebrations--not surprising given the closeness in relation--and the accompanying ribbon indicates that she took part in the diamond jubilee ceremony the following decade. Additional medals were produced for this occasion, merely changing the date to 1897 on the reverse, but those who had taken part in the prior festivities were given the ribbon instead so that their original medals could be re-utilized. EXTREMELY RARE and historically important.
