GREECE. Intercalated Olympic Games Silver Medal, 1906. NGC Unc Details--Edge Damage.
51mm; 68.77 gms. By J. C. Chaplain. Issued and awarded for the 1906 Intercalated Olympic Games held in Athens. Obverse: Laureate bust of Zeus facing, holding victoriola; Reverse: View of the Parthenon on the Akropolis. Lightly toned, with a pleasing matte nature to the surfaces. Some very light rim damage accounts for the details designation, but is not overly distracting. Quite RARE, this medal was issued for the Intercalated Olympic Games held between the 1904 games in St. Louis and the 1908 games in London. Meant to build upon the success of the first modern Olympic games held in Athens, the Intercalated games were set to run in between he regular Olympic Games, though the format never caught on, with these 1906 games being the only to occur. The medals which were won by the athletes are not considered part of the official Olympic canon, with awards such as these lying outside of the official framework of the Olympiad.

Estimate: $2200.00- $2600.00
