HUNGARY. Gold Medallic 2 Ducats, ND (1608). Matthias II. PCGS Genuine--Damage, AU Details Gold Shield.
24mm; 6.84 gms. Fr-Unlisted. Commemorating his Hungarian coronation. Obverse: MATTHIAS II REX HVNGARIAE REX CORONATVS MDCVIII, crowned, draped, and armored bust right, wearing ruffled collar and Order of the Golden Fleece; Reverse: ABVNDANTIA DILIGENTIBVS TE, personification of Abundance standing facing, head right, holding palm frond and cornucopia. This fascinating coin is a true RARITY, standing as one of just three pieces known. A vivid design is enriched by sharp details throughout, boosted by a good deal of brilliance that drenches both sides of this important example. A superlative gold coronation coin, it recalls the ceremonial start of a turbulent reign that saw the opening of the Thirty Years' War. The details designation emanates from some scattered fields marks and scuffs, as well some to the rims. Nevertheless, a significant numismatic milestone in the royal history of Hungary. Compare to a similar example, also exhibiting some tooling and evidence as a jewelry piece, which realized a hammer of 22,000 Euros in November 2019.
