COSTA RICA. Study Group of Contemporary Counterfeits and Modern Concoctions (4 pieces), ND (ca. 1844 to Mid-20th Century). Grade Range: VERY GOOD to EXTREMELY FINE.
A interesting gathering of fairly deceptive contemporary counterfeits and rudimentary modern concoctions perfect for the specialist looking to expand their collection, knowledge and understanding of the complex Carrillo series. Close personal inspection is advised and will reward the diligent bidder. All have been sent to PCGS and are accompanied by appropriate tickets. All exhibit varying degrees of tone from light golden-grey to rich old cabinet tone, some very attractive.

1) Contemporary Counterfeit "Carrillo" 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1844 or thereabouts). 23.69 gms. cf.KM-21 (for basic type). In imitation of Type I Countermark; double six-point star. On an 1844-ZsOM Mexico Republic 8 Reales. The date of the host coin falls out the countermarking range and thus by default can not be a government issue. The new arms of Costa Rica, double six-pointed star, are incorrect by design are applied to the wrong side for this host type and should have been applied to the eagle breast. The plug was removed from the wrong location though from the correct side for this host type and should have been removed at the base of the Phrygian cap. Lack of the initial test punch in the legend between "REPUBLICA" and "MEXICANA" is another indication of its deceptive nature. A couple of light scratches are noted for accuracy.

2) Contemporary Counterfeit "Carrillo" 2 Reales, ND (ca. 1844 or thereabouts). 6.22 gms. cf.KM-8 (for basic type). Same countermark as on the 1844-ZsOM 8 Reales in this lot. On a 1798-NGM Guatemala 2 Reales of Charles IV. Lacking test punch with attempted plug removal from the reverse.

Ex: Richard Stuart Collection; Ex: Frederick Mayer Collection Lot # 1251 (part of).

3) Modern Concoction "Carrillo" 1 Reales, ND (ca. early to mid-20th Century). 3.05 gms. cf.KM-4 (for basic type). In imitation of Type I Countermark; double six-pointed star. On an 1812-14-MoJJ Mexico armored bust 1 Real of Ferdinand VII. Lacking test punch and plug removal.

Ex: Richard Stuart Collection.

4) Modern Concoction 1 Real, 1846 (ca. Mid-20th Century). 2.19 gms. cf.KM-47. Cast copy of a Spanish colonial cob with bi-facial Costa Rican 1846 countermark. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS.

From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.

All with appropriate PCGS tickets.

Estimate: $300.00- $500.00
