GRENADA. Grenada - Spain. 1 Bitt (9 Pence), ND (ca.1818). PCGS FINE-15 Gold Shield.
1.97 gms. cf.KM-12 (same G stamp); cf.Prid-14 (same GS and G stamps); cf.Lyall Collection-5238 (same GS and G stamps); cf.Roehrs Collection Pt. I-Lot # 299 (same GS and G stamps); cf.Gordon Collection-Lot # 127 (same G stamp); cf.Pridmore Collection-Lot # 365 (same GS and G stamps); Byrne Collection-Lot # 541 (same stamps on a cross Pistareen); Gibbs Collection-Lot # 1454 (same stamps on a cross Pistareen). Issued by decree of 2 November 1814, denomination possibly issued circa 1818 when the value of the Pistareen was raised to 3 Bitts or 2/3 currency. Raised "GS" within rectangular indent, incuse "G" and incuse "1" countermarks applied to a cut 1/3 of a (17)93-M MF Spain Bust 2 Reales (Pistareen) of Charles IIII (IV). EXTREMELY RARE and only the second example of this variety that we are aware of with an incuse "1" denomination stamp. Countermarks well applied and clear, the "GS" countermark shows significant degradation and appears to have been reworked in similar fashion to the Martinique 22 over Eagle (Gordon Variety B - reworked, pg. 81). A lightly toned and intriguing example from this complex series of West Indies cut and countermarked issues certain to see spirited bidding from the specialist.

From an old South African Collection of a British Colonial Family.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
