GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Honduras. 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1839-40). PCGS FINE-15 Gold Shield; Both Countermarks: VF Details.
cf.KM-97.1 (for basic type); Jovel-Type III countermark (for sun over mountains countermark), host type not listed; Jara-Fig. 35 & Fig. 49 (for crown countermark). Type II Countermark; sun over mountains within circular boarder. EXTREMELY RARE host coin and combination with few examples known. Sun over mountains countermark applied to reverse with previous Honduras Provisional Government Crown countermark (ca. 1825) applied to the obverse of a cast imitative 1725-P Y Bolivia Cob 8 Reales of Luis I. Both countermarks well applied with good definition of the details. An attractive example of the type, displaying lovely old envelope tone highlighted by an iridescent sheen that pops out when tilted in the light. A highly interesting combination with plenty of crossover potential certain to see spirited bidding.

After gaining independence, the fledgling countries of Central America continued to struggle. This is most evident in the provisional as well as counterfeit coinage in circulation prior to proper mints being established. The problem was so dire that when the Provisional Government of Honduras issued the 8 November 1824 decree stating that all coins were to be brought to the government to be examined and if of proper or approximate weight and purity were to be countermarked. This included counterfeits in circulation as long as their weight and fineness were of good quality. Punches were ordered from Guatemala City, but were never received. It was later decided by the Honduran assembly to use an old colonial punch used for the King's Fifth or Quinto. The countermarking action effectively began about 6 months after the December deadline on 7 June 1825.
