GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Peru - Peru. 8 Reales, ND (1840-41). PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield; Obverse and Reverse Countermark: AU Details.
KM-121.3; Jovel-Type VII; Brunk-Pg.63 # 764 (this coin); Duffield-764 (this coin); Fonrobert-7390 (this coin); Ulex-2161 (this coin). Type IV Hinged Dies Countermark; Sun over mountains on obverse; Five-pointed star superimposed on bow, arrow and quiver on reverse. Issued by decree of 31 October, instituted December to Early 1841. EXCESSIVELY RARE and possibly unique. Bi-facial hinged dies countermark applied over previous Peru Royalist 1824 crown countermark. All on an 1822-LIMA JP Peru "Libre" 8 Reales, long tassels variety (KM-130). A wonderfully preserved beautiful survivor far nice than normally encountered for any host coin, let alone being a double countermark. The obverse displays lovely even fog grey patina with a blue iridescent sheen, while the reverse exhibits an attractive mottled soft grey to slate grey patina with a lovely iridescent cobalt sheen. An eye catching piece with an outstanding provenance destined for a fine cabinet.

The implementation of the hinged dies resulted in improved efficiency of the countermarking process.
