KM-27.2; Gomes-Jo.29.02; Vaz-not listed; Azevedo-Pg.29 (for basic type). Issued by decree of 20 August 1765 under Governor Baltazar Manoel Pereira do Lago. RARE with previous Mozambique countermark. Incuse "MR" monogram applied to obverse with previous Mozambique incuse "M" countermark issued by decree of 1760 under Governor Pedro de Saldanha de Albuquerque. All on a 1756-LIMA JM Peru 8 Reales (KM-55.1). Both countermarks are deeply impressed and clear with rich tone. A lightly toned and attractive example displaying light grey color atop of the devices while the fields exhibit a flint patina.
According to Krause, Vaz and Azevedo the "MR" monogram was to circulate for a longer period than any other Mozambique countermark with application until at least 1767.
