PERU. 8 Reales, 1824. Lima Mint. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield; Countermark: AU Details.
KM-130; Flatt-Fig.5; Grunthal-Sellschopp-287b(plate coin); Duffield-763; Guttag-4332; Sellschopp-157; Burzio-833; Fonrobert-9012. Issued by decree of 6 May 1824. Royalist crowned "1824" countermark applied to the reverse of an 1823-LIMA JP Peru "Libre" 8 Reales. Countermark boldly struck with nice clear full date and crown with only minor wear on the high points. Lovely old mottled cabinet patina throughout giving this piece a nice look.

Royalist forces again reoccupied the city of Lima in early 1824 which only lasted until mid-August. This would be the last time that Royalist forces would hold the city for the remainder of the war. During this time the above decree was issued recalling all insurgent coinage, for them to be brought to the mint, and to be countermarked. Citizens were given eight days to comply by bringing their coins to the mint for authorization or face seizure.
