COLOMBIA. Falsa Época. Sub-Standard Purity Contemporary Counterfeit 8 Escudos, 1810-P JF. Uncertain Local Mint "Popayan", Assayer JF. Ferdinand VII. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE/ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
27.00 gms. cf.Onza-1523 (different dies, in the name of Charles IV); cf.Cal-Type 21 (for basic type); cf.KM-66.2 (for basic type). Contemporary counterfeit 8 Escudos struck in imitation of 1810-P JF Colombia 8 Escudos of Ferdinand VII. The legends are Obverse: ".FERDND.VII.D.G. HISP.ET IND.R. 1810."; Reverse: ".IN.UNTROQ.FELIX..AUSPICE.DEO. P..JF". The style and execution of the present example is absolutely outstanding, far and away above what would be expected from a contemporary issues not produced with official minting equipment. Only minor differences can be detected in the design features upon close inspection namely a slight variation in the bust style as well as minor engraving errors in the arms of Spain on the reverse. The piece exhibits a bold strike in very convincing fine style closely resembling legitimate issues from this mint coupled with luster in the protected areas that one can associated with proper mint products. A very interesting issue sure to excited even the most advanced of collectors.

The exceptional fine style of the present example is much closer to legitimate issues than some others mints official products and as such should be considered a real treat for the specialist. This certainly would have been good enough to pass in circulation and to the uninitiated could even fool the modern eye.

From the John Kraljevich Collection of Contemporary Circulating Forgeries.

Estimate: $900.00- $1200.00
