PERU. Falsa Época. Sub-Standard Purity Contemporary Counterfeit 8 Escudos, 1820-LM JP. Uncertain Local Mint "Lima", Assayer JP. Ferdinand VII. VERY FINE.
26.96 gms. Onza-1552; cf.Cal-Type 12 (for basic type); cf.KM-129.1 (for basic type). Contemporary counterfeit 8 Escudos struck in imitation of a 1820-LM JP Peru 8 Escudos of Ferdinand VII. The legends are Obverse: "FERDIN.VII.D.G. HISP.ET IND.R. .1820."; Reverse: "IN.UTROQ.PELIX..AUSPICE.DEO .LM..J.P.". The style is fairly well done, but the execution was quite crude exhibiting a weak strike resulting in several flat spots on the reverse. The legends, though correct, are haphazardly place and a bit crude when compared to legitimate issues. A handsomely toned example with attractive golden-honey tone in the open areas with early sunset hues amongst the devices. An interesting type not normally encountered from this series sure to pique the interest of the specialist.

The bust style is quite interesting on this piece exhibiting a facial expression not normally encountered on legitimate issues of the time. A rather handsome rendition of the king in the later style before and during the wars for independence in the new world.

From the John Kraljevich Collection of Contemporary Circulating Forgeries.

Estimate: $900.00- $1200.00
