NETHERLANDS. Gelderland. Double Rose Noble, ND (1583-84). PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield.
36mm; 15.18 gms. Fr-Unlisted (though cf. 230 for the single rose noble); Delm-Unlisted (though cf. 636, as previous). Obverse: MONETA NOVA AV DVC GELRIE COM Z, regal figure, holding shield and sword, standing facing in ship bearing rose; banner to left; Reverse: + DEVS TRANSFERT ET CONSTITVIT REGNA, central rose in sunburst; all within polylobe with alternating lis and crowned lions rampant. An incredibly majestic and awe-inspiring RARITY, this unique piece, struck twice the weight of the single rose noble, can be traced all the way back to the Westhoff Collection from 1848. Featuring a great strike that is perfectly centered on a flan of good metal, this singular specimen may, in fact, have been intended to be a proposed type or example of the fine work that could be produced so soon after Gelderland broke from the Spanish Netherlands and joined the protestant Union of Utrecht. We expect that this impressive piece will generate a great deal of enthusiasm and spirited bidding from an eager community.
