PERU. Simon Bolivar -- Peru is Restored Oval Gold Proclamation Medal, 1824. Lima Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details Gold Shield.
14.17 gms. cf. Fonrobert-9178 (circular; silver); Barac-25. By Anastasio Davalos. Commemorating the restoration of Peru in Ayacucho. Obverse: A SU LIBERTADOR SIMON BOLIVAR, uniformed bust of Simon Bolivar right; Reverse: EL PERU RESTAURADO EN AYACUCHO ANO DE 1824, coat-of-arms of Peru below garlanded wreath. A VERY RARE variant in gold and with an oval planchet, rather than circular, this immensely pleasing issue features a bold strike and excellent artistry in the rendition of "the liberator's" portrait. As indicated by the details designation, some light hairlines are noted from a prior cleaning, though are not distracting, and the medal exhibits little other evidence of any actual wear or handling. As this cataloger could locate just two other examples of this rather difficult and enchanting proclamation medal, it goes without saying that there should be intense focus and consideration for this monumental piece, assuredly destined to reside in the finest of Latin American cabinets or a collection devoted to exceptional works of medallic art.

Estimate: $8000.00- $12000.00
