RUSSIA. 5 Rubles, 1869-CNB HI. St. Petersburg Mint. Alexander II. NGC PROOF-65 Cameo.
Fr-163, KM-Y-B26, Bit-17, Sev-486. Mintmaster's initials are those of Nicolai Iossa, who served in the St. Petersburg Mint from 1848 to 1877. Exquisite, deep orange-gold surfaces show the sharply struck designs expected of a Proof, as well as the stark cameo contrast of an early strike from the dies before the frosting diminished through repeated strikings. Fields show the expected die and planchet lines associated with these 19th century Proofs, and are otherwise wholly free of post-minting handling marks. This is the sole 1869 5 Rubles in Proof graded by NGC, and none are listed in the PCGS Population Report. A RARE issue in Gem Proof quality and a coin destined for a cabinet of high-end Russian coins.
