RUSSIA. Mikhailovich Silver Medal, 1894. Alexander III. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.
42 mm. Diakov-1005.1; Smirnov-1386. By A. Scharff. Obverse: St. George on horseback right slaying dragon below with his sword; Reverse: Moneta seated right, inspecting a coin and leaning on a pillar inscribed "NUMIZMATIKA" (Numismatics), mint worker holding a mallet stands before her. A RARE, artistically superb medal that, considering its elusiveness, must have been given to distinguished attendees or made available to visitors of the exhibition of Grand Duke Mikhailovich's coin and medal collection between 1887 and 1909. While not visible in the plastic holder, the edge of this piece is apparently inscribed '1894', dating its issuance to that year. From what is visible, one can easily determine that the appearance is far nicer than most seen, with variegated russet-amber, mauve and blue tone atop highly reflective surfaces. Magnified inspection uncovers moderate handling, as is suggested by the grade, yet most it remains hidden from the eye. Considering the overall eye-appeal, a prime opportunity for the collector to not only acquire an incredibly elusive medal, but also one that specifically relates to the numismatic field that we all love.

Estimate: $6000.00- $9000.00
