SPAIN. Silvered Reverse Tin 20 Reales Pattern, 1855. Paris Mint, By Louis Charles Bouvet. Isabel II. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.
cf.Calico-Page 772; O'Donnell-548; Forrer-Vol. I, pg. 241. Plain edge. Obverse: Bust of Queen Isabella II wearing tiara, braided hair coiled into a single bun held by ribbon, date below with legend around; Reverse: highly stylized rendition of the crowned arms of Spain encompassed by the order of the golden fleece, flanked by the pillars of Hercules, legend around with denomination below. A lovely and very well produced example made in an interesting and unconventional manor where tin was used for the planchet with a thin layer of silver on the reverse. The obverse displays a lovely muted grey tone with a light blue iridescent sheen while the reverse exhibits lustrous surfaces with attractive smokey grey tone with slate patina amongst the devices. An attractive and high interesting issue sure to add depth to the next collection it enters.

The patterns of the unadopted designs for Queen Isabella II's new coinage were produced and submitted by Bouvet in 1852 in hopes to be awarded the coining contract. Several examples were prepared including various Spanish 20 Reales and Philippines 5 Pesetas, both of which share the same obverse die.

Estimate: $1500.00- $2000.00
