AUSTRIA. Order of Franz Joseph Grand Cross Breast Star, Instituted 1849. EXTREMELY FINE.
78.5 mm. 71.9 gms. Type I (1849-1880). Barac-627; Werlich-125. Eight point multi-rayed silver star with a gold-rimmed crowned red enamel cross pattee superimposed on a gold and black enamel double-headed Austrian Eagle. At the center of the cross are the initials F J in gold on white enamel. A chain held by the eagle is inscribed VIRIBUS UNITIS across the lower arm of the cross. The reverse of the Star is unembellished, except for the maker's medallion inscribed VINC. MAYER'S SOHNE / (Austrian Eagle image) / WIEN, and a single G counterstamp to the left of the medallion. The single hinged tunic pin is counterstamped with two recessed "A" hallmarks. Virtually complete enamels, missing only a couple tiny flakes from the feathers on the eagle's left head. The metal parts of this outstanding example are complete and undamaged. Housed in a non-contemporary fitted case by S. Johnson of Rome.
