SPAIN. Cross for Defenders of Madrid, Instituted 1817. VERY FINE.
26 x 43 mm (excluding loop). Eight point four armed green enamel star with gold flames between the arms. Central oval medallion with a heavenly arm wielding a sword emerging from a cloud on one side, and a bear shaking its prey out of a tree on the other. Suspended by a hinged mount from a crown hanger. The metal parts are sound and complete, but there are chips and enamel loss to the arms of the cross on the obverse, and cracks through the enamel on the cross arms on the reverse. Additionally tiny flakes of white enamel have been lost around the periphery of both sides of the central oval medallion. Still a very attractive and significant issue. This rare badge was issued to those who (unsuccessfully) defended Madrid from Napoleon's final advance into Spain in December of 1808.

Estimate: $750.00- $1000.00
