Renaissance Æ Cast Paduan Medallion. Workshop of Valerio Belli or after(?, 1468-1546), circa 1600-1900. VHE MICHI, draped bust right, facing shield decorated with gorgon / Vulcan(?) standing right, presenting shield to Aeneas(?), standing facing; to right, solider standing left; between, figure kneeling(?). The identification of the reverse depiction is uncertain, although the Historisches Museum Basel catalogue suggests it may represent the story recounted in book eight of Virgil's Aeneid, where Aeneas is presented with a shield depicting the future history of Rome.
