Thessaly, Thessalian League AR Stater. Mid-late 1st century BC. Petraios and Ptolemaios, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘΕΣΣΑ-ΛΩΝ, Athena Itonia advancing right, holding shield and preparing to hurl spear; ΠΕΤΡΑΙΟV above, ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΣ in exergue. BCD Thessaly II 887.2; HGC 4, 210. 5.86g, 26mm, 12h.

Good Extremely Fine; attractive cabinet tone.

The magistrate Petraios, who was strategos of the Thessalian League, was the son of Themistogenes of Gyrton, and was counted by Julius Caesar (Commentarii de Bello Civili, III.35) as a steadfast supporter, later executed by Brutus in 44 BC (Cicero, Philippics XIII.33).
