Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161). AE as (27mm, 9.47 gm, 1h). VF, light smoothing. Rome, AD 140-144. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P, laureate head of Antoninus Pius right / Mars, with spear and shield, descending through the air toward Rhea Silvia, who reclines to left, half-draped. RIC III 694a. Very rare, an evocative (and erotic) reverse recalling the origins of Rome.
In Roman mythology, Rhea Silva was the daughter of Numitor, king of Alba Longa. Although a Vestal Virgin, she became pregnant and claimed it was via a nocturnal visit by the god Mars, the scene depicted on the reverse of this copper as issued in anticipation of Rome's 900th anniversary. The twins Romulus and Remus were born of the divine union.
