KINGS of MACEDON. Philip III Arrhidaios. 323-317 BC. AV Stater (18.5mm, 8.61 g, 8h). In the types of Philip II. Pella mint. Struck under Antipater or Polyperchon, circa 323-318/7 BC. Head of Apollo right, wearing laurel wreath / ΦIΛIΠΠOY, charioteer, holding kentron in right hand, reins in left, driving biga right; kantharos below. Le Rider Group IIIA, – (D200/R352 [unlisted die combination]); SNG ANS 172–6; SNG Ashmolean 2452 (same obv. die, later die state); Reichman 33, lot 2 (same rev. die). Underlying luster, flaw repaired on neck and jaw. EF.

From the Jonathan P. Rosen Collection.

This obverse of this coin was struck from an earlier die state than other examples that are published. It appears that the die was modified at the crown of Apollo's head, where more hair was added, perhaps to cover a break that had developed. Looking at Le Rider's corpus, though, makes it clear that this was not an unusual phenomenon for staters of Philip II type.
