Vespasian. AD 69-79. Æ Sestertius (33mm, 25.74 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 71. Laureate head right / FORTVNAE REDVCI, Fortuna standing left, holding rudder set on globe and cradling cornucopia in left arm. RIC II.1 231. Smooth dark brown-green surfaces, a few minor pits. Near VF.
From the Summer Haven Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 113 (11 May 2005), lot 258.
RIC II, vol. 1 lists this variety of sestertius as Rarity 2 (R2), indicating only one to three recorded specimens. This is clearly in error, as the type is regularly encountered in public auctions surveyed over the past 20 years.
