This piece is the smaller of a set of two commemorative medals coined during the Victorian Exhibition in Melbourne, which was held from 6 November 1872 until 8 January 1873, and was made from dies by the esteemed diesinker Julius Hogarth. The Aboriginal head seen here was Hogarth's first work for Stokes & Martin and was considered one of the finest pieces yet created in Australia, helping to make his employers the outstanding colonial medallists of the period. The firm of Stokes & Martin is still in existence today as Stokes Badges, having over the intervening years produced medals that have marked the turning points in Australia's history.
