Declaring independence from Nigeria in May 1967, the Republic of Biafra was a short-lived nation whose existence was marred throughout by a bitter civil war waged against the Nigerian government. The conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded Great Britain's formal decolonisation of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963.
