The series from which this coin comes was issued by the Republic of Colombia for use in its three state-sponsored leper colonies: Agua de Dios, Cano de Lord, and Contratacion. When the hospitals were closed in the late 1950's, patients were allowed to exchange these special coins for regular currency at any bank and thus their survival is rare, most especially so in any good grade.
