Prior to the urbanisation of the area due to the expansion of Greater London, the area between Romford and Dagenham was a rural farming community known as Beacontree Heath. Farmers that worked the land often used tokens such as the present piece to pay their workers, often stipulating where the tokens could be redeemed.
