Diva Matidia (niece of Trajan) AR Denarius. Rome, after AD 119. [DIVA MATI]DIA AVGVST, diademed and draped bust right / CONSE[CRATIO], eagle with spread wings right on sceptre, head turned left. RIC 752 (Trajan); BMCRE 329 (Hadrian); RSC 2. 3.10g, 17mm, 6h.

Good Fine. Very Rare.

From a private European collection.

The daughter of Trajan's elder sister Marciana, Matidia was raised to the rank of Augusta after the death of her mother and coinage was struck in her name under Trajan. Her daughter Sabina having married the future emperor Hadrian, it was thus fitting that on her death in 119 Hadrian was able to sanction the production of a Consecration issue for his mother-in-law.
