French Colonies : Canada 'Gloriam Regni' 1670 Recoined 5 sols with a 1/12th Ecu 'aux Palmes' 1694 P (From Dijon mint 'P'). Coin grades overall VF for type. Very clear 1670 undertype date with some partial legends of Gloriam Regni. Clear engraver mark (Tower) visible after date.
This major numismatic discovery was published in a detailed CNJ article ( (2015) and officially introduced in the 2020 new Charlton catalogue of Canadian coins. Also published in Sydney Martin masterwork ''French Coinage specifically for Colonial America', 2015, p.97-99, Cat. No. : Martin B.1`.
One of the only 7 Specimens known to date. But it must be noted that In fact, each single issue is unique as they are all overstruck in a different manner some more pronounced and detailed than others. Overstrikes come with different date/Mint combinations of the twelfth ecu aux Palmes type. So far, we are aware of three 1694 from D, G and P mints, then three 1695 from A, K and T mints, a seventh one (ND) from Paris mint. This 1694 P offered here from Dijon mint, being the last Specimen discovered. A first Specimen (the 1695 A/1670 A, lot #66) was sold by TCNC at the 2017 RCNA auction for 11,500 including fees. No doubt, it can be considered as one of the most exciting series of all Canadian colonial coinage !
