SELEUKID EMPIRE. Seleukos I Nikator. 312-281 BC. AR Drachm (15.5mm, 3.09 g, 12h). Indian standard. Aï Khanoum mint. Struck circa 284-280 BC. Laureate head of Zeus right / Athena standing right biga of elephants, brandishing spear and shield; Δ-in-circle above, Π below. SC 280.3a var. (no control mark below elephant); SMAK S1DI var. (unlisted dies and variety with lower control mark); HGC 9, 32f. Toned, a hint of granularity, deposit on reverse. VF. Apparently unique as a drachm with this control below the elephant (but see below).

This variety is known as a hemidrachm: SC 282.2 and SMAK S1HD1–9. Additonally, a drachm is known with a slightly different control mark below the elephant: CNG E-432, lot 103.
