Sicily, Syracuse AR Hemiobol. Time of Dionysios I, circa 405-367 BC. Octopus / Sunburst of sixteen rays, within shallow incuse circle. BFA 24, 222; otherwise unpublished in the standard references. 0.27g, 8mm, 12h.

Near Very Fine. Extremely Rare - apparently only the second known.

From the inventory of Roma Numismatics Ltd.

Both the star and octopus feature prominently on the coinage of Dionysios I at Syracuse. Previously attributed to an uncertain Sicilian mint due to the use of the star or sunburst motif by Campanian mercenaries on the island, the type should be securely re attributed to Syracuse on the basis of the unambiguously Dionysid motifs.
