The Durand Cup, the oldest football tournament in Asia and the de facto Indian counterpart to the FA Cup in England, was first staged in 1888. Named after its founder, Sir Mortimer Durand, GCMG, KCSI, KCIE, PC (1850-1924), at first it was effectively a prize competed for by British Indian army teams, the biggest victory being the 6-1 defeat of the Black Watch by the Somerset Light Infantry in 1896; since independence non-military teams have exclusively competed for the prize
