GERMANY. Empire. The Quadruple Alliance Silver Medal, 1916. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.
Zetz-3053. 33mm; 18.54 gms. By F. König in Nuremberg. Obverse: Uniformed busts of Ferdinand (of Bulgaria), wearing fur cap, Mehmet (of the Ottoman Empire), wearing fez, Franz Joseph (of Austria-Hungary), and Wihelm II (of Germany); between them, a downward-facing sword draped with laurel wreath and piercing dragon; Reverse: Soldier advancing right, wielding torch and sword; to right, Fama holding banner and sounding trumpet. Exceptionally lustrous, with brilliant prooflike surfaces and a light cameo nature to the devices. A hint of charming toning is noted near the peripheries. Tied with one other specimen at this level, with just two finer seen at PCGS.

The Quadruple Alliance of WWI emanated from the alliance of Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1879. The Ottoman Empire (in November 1914) and the Kingdom of Bulgaria (in October 1915) joined after the outbreak of the war, though the former had maintained a close relationship with both Germany and Austria-Hungary for a number of years. Economics were the main facet for an Ottoman entry, as Germany played an important role in the empire's financial growth and success, while reclamation was the major goal of Bulgaria, as she wished to win back territory ceded to Serbia during their losses in the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913.
